  • If only EFTs were more Effective

    July 10, 2008 – 3:46 am

Recently I had to transfer a certain amount from my ICICI bank account to my Citibank one, and EFT (electronic fund transfer) is usually the more convenient mode, letting you transfer where-ever you have a stable Internet connection. But its still not real time, and you still have date and time constraints. EFT still take anywhere between 1-3 days. Why you ask? RBI rules, because at the operational level, its still a manual process. Imagine a scenario when you urgently wanted money to be transfered to an alternate account. One may argue that these checks are counterfeiting measures, but you can always use technology to your advantage. True EFT is when the inter-bank  transfers happen in real-time, until then I’ll play the waiting game the old way.

    The Uber Convergence Device?

    May 28, 2008 – 9:17 am

Internet and the advances in technology has shrunk our world, and information and communication is just a finger tip away. Convergence has been the buzz-word over the last decade, and this is becoming more of a reality than science fiction. But is convergence really there to stay? I would say YES. We need a device that satisfies all our communication and information needs without having to rely on an array of devices (not to mention the battery of accessories that accompany it).

Over the years, multiple devices and technologies have emerged as a result of this desire, and they’ve fulfilled the role in some way or the other. Some were fancy and futuristic but failed to stoke the user’s desire, others stayed longer but couldn’t talk with other devices and remained an island on its own, running a myriad of technologies and protocols without the ability to cross communicate.

But I see a trend thats happening and thats here to stay, and most of us are already carrying the pre-decessor or atleast the seed to an uber device. No prizes for guessing, its your mobile phone! What started off as a pure communication device is now assuming various roles. Phone -> Text Messaging -> Internet Browser -> Camera -> Music Player -> ?!. It has evolved and converged faster because this is one device that is very personal to the user, and is with you almost at all times.

Now what are the other roles it can assume? Podcasting device, Broadcasting station, peer-peer node, GPS tracking device, your personal wallet (replacing the need for a seperate smart card, debit card, credit card).
I will take it step further, how about it being your personal computer! You think thats too futuristic? Not really! your mobile phone can laser project a virtual keyboard on any flat surface, with a bank of ultra-mini memory of over 100 GB, you have a hard-drive. With a wi-fi connection in the phone and GPRS, you are connected to the Internet or a LAN/WAN. A mini-projector acts as your display device that can project on to a flat surface. You get the picture.

Its only a matter of time when a device capable of all that is possible. But some of the other issues remain. An uber-convergence mobile phone device will also consume more power, and would require a better managed internal system, battery with better stamina or a self charging device (solar powered for e.g.).

Think its all in the air? Think again, any technology company worth its salt has invested in mobile technology or is converging into mobile technology. It would be interesting to see how the mobile phone evolves into the uber-convergence device.

Fix the Youtube “Sort by View Count”

    March 22, 2008 – 2:54 pm

This post will show you to how work around the Youtube view count sorting option, which is mysteriously missing from the list of sort options. To me its a very important sorting option, because the results that appear on top by virtue of the view count is usually the one you are looking for.

Now to work around the problem, simply add video_view_count to the search_sort query string in the search URL.

For e.g. if you have searched for ”music”, the URL would appear as follows …
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=music&search_type=

To sort by “Video View Count” add the tag as mentioned earlier, and it should look as follows…

    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=music&search_sort=video_view_count

    Sabsebolo.com - Sabeer Bhatia’s newest venture

    February 8, 2008 – 8:54 am

After a couple of failed ventures, erstwhile IT poster boy, Hotmail Sabeer Bhatia is on to his latest venture, Sabsebolo.com. It claims to provide India’s first free and reservation-less conferencing facility. After sign-up users are provided with a conference id and PIN, which they can use by calling a toll -free number.

Revenue for this business would be generated through advertisements. According to Bhatia, before the conference begins there would be a five-second advertisement.

I hope though that the advertisements are not context sensitive, so if I say “I need money”, I hope an ICICI voice ad doesn’t interrupt the conversation :)

Microsoft Bids US$ 44 billion for Yahoo!

    February 2, 2008 – 3:51 pm

    Microsoft Yahoo

Software giant Microsoft bids US$ 44 billion for Yahoo! in cash and stocks, a 60% premium over current market price. The search engine market is dominated by Google with an impressive 56% dominance (in the US). Yahoo and Microsoft account for about 31% of the pie, and the rest scattered across the multitude of search engines. But even with the merger, it isn’t such an exciting deal, and I suspect the combined market share to dip even further. Unfortunately for Yahoo, business hasn’t been very good off late and with declining profits and margins, it would seem like a good deal from Microsoft.

The combined entity may however pose a semblance of a threat to Google, and may get Google on its toes. Will Yahoo exist as a seperate entity, or will it remain a skin powered by Microsoft Live search waits to be seen.
